Una Breve (Brief) Update

I have a roommate! Her name is Francesca, she's 24 years old, and is from Trieste. She said, "ah, piccolina!" when I told her I'm 20 years old, but then said her boyfriend is also 20...and his name is Francesco. How cute is that. She seems really nice, so hopefully we'll get along well. She said she was very happy to find the room so neat because her previous rooommate was apparently very messy. So that's a good start!

Yesterday we began a unit on the Italian anti-Fascist Resistance during World War II, and went to visit a memorial site a few minutes outside of Bologna. It was in the hills, and the landscape was very beautiful. It commemorated a battle fought between the anti-Fascist partisans and the Fascist army, and there were rocks with names of each of the Fascist soldiers who were killed (and one rock for the 47 whose names are unknown) and a white cross at the base of the hills where the bodies of the soldiers remained. It was very sad to see, but very interesting of course, and the view was beautiful.

I learned a new Italian phrase a few days ago while talking to an Italian about being short, since so many Italians are. It's the equivalent of "Good things come in small packages" - Nelle botte piccole, c'รจ il vino buono. In small bottles, there's good wine.

Hi Gabrielle,
Just caught up,
Love going to the links it's great.

Trieste is very beautiful, hopefully your new room mate will take you home for a weekend.

Just beginning to go thru my photos will send some later,

Like Jordy, I would have been very interested in the student uprisings of the late 60's early 70's a very exciting time for us.

Some interesting movies about the 30's in Italy by Italians are "The Garden of the Finzi Continis" and "The Conformist" if you have time.

Love
Pamela

That phrase you learned is quite possibly the cutest thing ever!! Sorry I've been MIA these past few weeks. I'm mailing you something tomorrow, I hope it gets there! YAY you have a sweet roomie - (I'll try not to be too jealous even though I wish it was ME living there with you) I miss you so much. It was tough going over to your house to sing all the while knowing I couldn't just call your room at Vassar afterwards and tell you about it haha! Keep enjoying every minute pretty girl <3

Delighted to hear that you have a roommate again - sounds like it has started off well, too. I came across this political clip involving Italian gondoliers (or so they say - who knows?) which I thought you might enjoy. Let me know if this link lets you see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25jhBVaiQw0
Keep up your delightful posts (thank you to your accomodating friends with computers!) and I hope that your laptop is released soon.
Take good care of yourself!

Okay, it doesn't show up as a "link" but if you copy and paste it into your browser (or even into your google bar search window, if you have one) it should work.
