Yesterday was our final ECCO-sponsored trip, this time for the Literature class. We went to Lake Garda, in central Northern Italy, east of Milan. We visited the estate of Gabriele d'Annunzio, a fascist poet of the early 20th century who was a very, very strange man. I'm not in the Lit class but I hear that his poetry is very egotistic and superficial. He was also very close with Mussolini, Italy's fascist dictator. Regardless, d'Annunzio lived in a beautiful region, and the views alone were amazing!

So that was an interesting day trip. It was relatively far (about 3 hours driving) and it was freezing, but the views and the food, and even the peculiar estate, made it worth it. The next bright star on our horizon is the ECCO Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday night...at least the holiday won't be completely overlooked. Happy Thanksgiving!
First we went to a restaurant for our group lunch, and then toured d'Annunzio's estate. Apparently he was a cenophobic, which means he had a fear of empty spaces. That was certainly very apparent in his expansive house. There were no empty spaces at all. Lots of clutter and knick-knacks. He was also a hypochondriac, and if I understood our tourguide correctly, he also had a double personality: he was both very Catholic, and anti-Catholic. He had lots of Catholic paraphernalia, including a full-sized statue of a wounded Jesus and many paintings of the Madonna and Child, but he also had many statues from Eastern religion, like Buddhist and Hindu statues. The house was very dark and reminded me of the Addams Family or the Munsters...we were joking that we should have gone there for our Halloween weekend trip instead of to Turin.
And if it wasn't enough that he filled his house with unnecessary objects, d'Annunzio must have felt that the forest surrounding his house was also too empty, because he put a ship right in the middle of it, overlooking the lake. Yes, that's right, a ship. Also nearby in the surrounding forest was the mausoleum where d'Annunzio is buried.

i was at lake garda this summer. i decided to take a trip there while i was in Verona. So gorgeous. And it felt soo nice to go swimming and find some relief from the unforgiving August sun. I'm glad you got to see a part of it too!!
We talked about D'Annunzio in my Italian Cinema class! I think my professor would agree with your observations of his house haha. The lake looks really beautiful though!
baci!
