Yay for PRESIDENT OBAMA! Everyone in Italy is thrilled...in fact, I don't think Italians fully realized that either Obama or McCain could win the election. Italians loved Obama before the election, and they love him even more now.
We went to an "election party" at Bologna's main library on Tuesday night to watch the CNN coverage, but it ended up being slightly less exciting that we had hoped. There were several medium-sized TVs showing coverage, but we were expecting a big screen that was easy to see and hear. There were lots of American students there, as well as Italians, and there were TV cameras and newspapers interviewing people about who they hoped would win, why, etc. It was pretty exciting, but because of the time difference, we didn't know anything until after midnight, and nothing substantial until 2am, and the library closed at 3am. I didn't end up staying up all night to see the results, but I was very happy the next morning!
As much as I would have liked to have voted in the US and watch the election coverage at home, it's definitely an experience being in Europe during an election year...especially this election. People are just so excited and involved. Italians are into politics anyway, but I think for many of them, they feel like it's their election, and their victory, too. Which in a way it certainly is. And, as corny as it may sound, I feel like I can finally be proud to be American again. I really do think this will improve our international reputation...I think it already has. I am also so proud that this was the first time I voted for president, in such a crucial and epic election. This will be one for the history books.
